Pokemon Gengar market watch – updated July 14, 2026
Gengar Pokemon Cards Collectors Are Watching Right Now
Gengar cards are having the right kind of collector moment: Mega Evolution is back in the conversation, Fusion Strike's alt art remains a modern grail, and older Phantom Forces and Team Up cards still give collectors clear chase-card targets.
Quick Read
Mega Gengar is the current search hook.
Ascended Heroes gives collectors a fresh SIR and a lower-cost Mega Attack Rare, which makes the theme timely.
Older Gengar cards still matter.
Team Up and Phantom Forces give this list real collector depth beyond one modern set.
Use market plus median.
Several Gengar cards have a wide gap between market price and listed median, so condition and seller photos matter.

The Gengar Cards to Watch
Modern headline chase
Mega Gengar ex
284/217 – ME: Ascended Heroes – Special Illustration Rare
This is the obvious modern anchor for a Gengar watchlist. It has the Mega Evolution return, the Special Illustration Rare label, and the kind of art that gets searched outside normal set collectors.
Market watch note: The market is high enough that a single low or high sale can distort perception. Treat photos, seller history, and exact language/condition as part of the price.
Sword and Shield grail
Gengar VMAX (Alternate Art Secret)
271/264 – SWSH08: Fusion Strike – Secret Rare
Fusion Strike Gengar VMAX is still the card many collectors mean when they say modern Gengar chase. It is recognizable, memeable, and hard to replace in a high-end binder page.
Market watch note: The card has a wide condition-sensitive market. Small edge wear or surface issues can matter more than the headline market number.
Tag Team premium
Gengar & Mimikyu GX (Alternate Full Art)
165/181 – SM: Team Up – Ultra Rare
The Gengar and Mimikyu Tag Team alternate art is one of the strongest ghost-type collector cards from Sun and Moon. It has character pairing, scarcity, and a clean search story.
Market watch note: Because the listed median sits far above market, the live ask can move differently than the last clean market comp. Do not treat every raw copy as equal.
XY full-art chase
Gengar EX (114 Full Art)
114/119 – XY: Phantom Forces – Ultra Rare
Phantom Forces is a natural home for Gengar collectors, and the 114/119 full art is one of the cleanest older English Gengar targets.
Market watch note: Older XY-era Near Mint copies can vary a lot. Ask for photos if the listing does not make corners and surface easy to inspect.
Secret rare Mega
M Gengar EX (121 Secret Rare)
121/119 – XY: Phantom Forces – Secret Rare
This is the older Mega Gengar card that ties directly into the current Mega Gengar interest without needing modern set hype.
Market watch note: The median and market are close, which makes it a cleaner comp than some grail-tier Gengar cards. Condition is still the deciding factor.
Rainbow Tag Team
Gengar & Mimikyu GX (Secret)
186/181 – SM: Team Up – Secret Rare
Even as rainbow rares became less fashionable, Team Up Tag Team secrets kept collector attention because the character pairings are strong.
Market watch note: Compare the rainbow secret against the alternate full art separately. They share characters, but they do not move as the same card.
Promo lane
M Gengar EX
XY166 – XY Promos – Promo
The XY166 promo has a simple identity: Mega Gengar, promo release, and a collector-friendly number that is easy to search.
Market watch note: Promo copies often have storage and edge issues. A clean copy can deserve a different comp than a technically Near Mint copy with weak photos.
Core Phantom Forces
M Gengar EX
35/119 – XY: Phantom Forces – Ultra Rare
This is the more accessible Phantom Forces Mega slot compared with the 121/119 secret rare, but it still carries the same set identity.
Market watch note: Market and median were close at publication, so this one is easier to price-check than the high-spread grails.
Modern full art
Gengar ex
193/162 – SV05: Temporal Forces – Ultra Rare
Temporal Forces gives collectors a modern Gengar ex full art at a price that is still reachable compared with the older and alternate-art chase cards.
Market watch note: This is a useful mid-tier tracker. If collector demand broadens, lower-cost Gengar full arts are usually where buyers look next.
Binder favorite
Gengar
TG06/TG30 – Lost Origin Trainer Gallery – Ultra Rare
Lost Origin TG06 is the affordable art card that still feels premium in a Gengar page. It is easier to recommend for watchlists because supply and sales are more active.
Market watch note: Because the entry point is lower, shipping and photo quality can change the real value of a copy quickly.
Modern Mega entry
Mega Gengar ex
269/217 – ME: Ascended Heroes – Mega Attack Rare
This gives collectors a current Mega Gengar slot without paying SIR money, and it benefits from the same Ascended Heroes search demand.
Market watch note: Watch the spread between market and listed median. If the lower supply gets bought through, this card can reprice faster than older high-supply cards.
Budget Mega Gengar
Mega Gengar ex
056/094 – ME02: Phantasmal Flames – Double Rare
Not every binder card needs to be a chase. The Double Rare is the low-cost way to add modern Mega Gengar to a themed page.
Market watch note: At this level, the checkout total matters more than a few cents of market movement. Bundle shipping or buy locally if the card is purely for a binder slot.
How to Read the Watchlist
The cleanest way to read this list is by lane. Mega Gengar ex 284/217, Gengar VMAX 271/264, and Gengar & Mimikyu GX 165/181 are the premium chase lane. Phantom Forces and XY Promos are the older Mega/EX lane. Temporal Forces, Lost Origin Trainer Gallery, and lower-rarity Mega Gengar ex cards are the practical binder lane.
The watch signal is not just price. Watch whether Near Mint supply is being replaced at the same level, whether listed medians drift away from market price, and whether recent social/search attention pulls buyers into the lower-cost cards after the grails move.
FAQ
What is the top Gengar card in this watchlist?
Mega Gengar ex 284/217 from Ascended Heroes and Gengar VMAX 271/264 from Fusion Strike are the headline modern chase cards. The Tag Team Gengar & Mimikyu GX alternate full art is the premium Sun and Moon-era pick.
Are these Gengar cards guaranteed to go up?
No. This is a collector market watch based on current TCGplayer Holofoil market pricing, listed median prices, set identity, and collector demand. Prices can rise, fall, or move sideways.
Why include lower-priced Mega Gengar ex cards?
A themed binder page works better when it has more than grails. The Mega Attack Rare and Double Rare give collectors modern Mega Gengar options without paying Special Illustration Rare prices.
Should I use market price or listed median?
Use both. Market price is a cleaner historical pricing signal, while listed median shows where current sellers are trying to price the card. If those numbers are far apart, inspect recent sales and photos before buying.
